Who We are
The Mind and Music Ministry began with a group of local “Musicians on a Mission,” who love music and desire to serve the community. God has blessed us to play instruments, sing, direct, teach and write music. They are humbled to share the gifts God has given them.
Why We exist
We exist to bring awareness to mental health through music while guiding people into an authentic encounter with Christ.
Mental health challenges have become more prevalent in our society. Many are suffering in silence. Therefore, there is a growing need for support, via professionals, family, friends, and the church.
Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.
Mental health issues can affect anyone. Statistics show:
• One in 5 American adults live with a mental health condition.
• One in 6 young people have experienced a major depressive episode.
• One in 20 Americans have lived with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.
Music for awareness
Music can inspire and entertain. It also has psychological effects that can relax your mind and improve your health and well-being.
Every year there are new findings on the benefits of music for your mental health and it is incredible that an individual’s physical and mental well-being can be improved by something as simple as listening to good tunes.
At the present time, more and more people are using music for mental health treatments and there have been many positive effects. If you’ve ever felt pumped up while listening to your favorite fast-paced song or been moved to tears by a tender live performance, then you easily understand the power of music to impact moods and inspire action.
There are several effects that music has on the brain. Chemicals like oxytocin and dopamine are lured out by satisfying sounds and they aren’t the only ones released when you find the right song.

The Mind and Music Workshop gives us the opportunity to do what we enjoy doing while bringing awareness to Mental Health
This event will help raise funds for The Mental Health Alliance.
This event consists of topics that provide instruction and information for choir members, soloists, musicians, worship leaders, and directors.
Topics include the following: It Takes What It Takes (The Purpose and Process) & Be Still and Let God Work (For it’s the Lord’s Doing).
We’re proud to announce that this event will be held January 15th – 17th, 2027, at Greater Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 175 Richardson Drive, Jackson, MS.
Friday and Saturday, January 15th and 16th will include the instructional topics and conclude with rehearsal. Participants must register to sing in the workshop choir.
The workshop will conclude Sunday, January 17th with a musical featuring the workshop choir and special guest: Venora Brown, guest choir: Rembert Memorial Washington Chorale, and more.
Workshop Agenda:
- Friday, January 15, 2027; Time 6:15 p.m.(Registration required)
- Saturday, January 16, 2027; Time 8:00 a.m. (Registration required)
- Sunday, January 17, 2027; Time 3:00 p.m. (Musical; Free to the public)
Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Registration is $12 and will begin November 1, 2026 through December 1, 2026.
Marquis Powell
Pastor Marquis Powell has a myriad of success stories under his belt. He has a witty, charming, yet comical personality that is sure to grab the attention of the most stubborn of critics. Marquis (Marq) Powell has been a nationally known preacher of the gospel for over 20 years. Pastor Powell is a pastor, evangelist, revivalist, and youth advocate who loves preaching the truth of God’s word using illustration and practical examples to make it relatable to children and young adults so they can find it easy to apply to their daily lives.
Pastor Powell is also an author, singer, and songwriter penning songs for “The Messengers” who was founded by the late Willie Banks in 1972 and signed to Malaco Records, and wrote, directed, and recorded several songs for the Men’s division choir of the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s (GMWA) “Men of Promise” signed by Tyscot CGI Records. He has released four CDs.
For years, he’s served as workshop clinician, composer, producer, director, and minister of music playing instruments such as the piano, organ, drums, bass, and guitar. He collaborated with Mr. Bobby Jones of the Bobby Jones Gospel hour television program, gospel artists Timothy Wright, Ruby Terry, and many other Malaco artists. Minister Powell was named “musician of the Year” by the Jackson Gospel Music Awards.
“Marq Powell and the Voices of Christ” is a gospel group formed by him in 2008. Presently, they are joined to Only4Jesus and RuffBoyz Recording Company. Mr. Powell also has a Youtube Channel where he displays various short teaching videos on different topics to get people to change the way they think and live so they can become the person that God has called them to be.
Joann bracey weathersby
Minister Joann Bracey Weathersby is a lifetime residence of Flora, Ms.
She has been married to Johnny Weathersby for 42 years.
They share a blended family of four children and are blessed with twelve grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Minister Joann accepted the call of God on her life in 2005. In that same year God birthed Sisters Hearts Ministry which is dedicated to empowering teens and women by encouraging them to know their true identity which can only be found in God by His word.
Joann published her first book in 2017 titled: Proverbs 31 Woman: A Peek into Her Past. Her T-shirt line, RoyalTee Designs 357, was established the same year.
Joann’s heart’s desire is to share the love, salvation, grace and mercy of Jesus.
Minister Joann’s only claim to fame is that she is a DAUGHTER and SERVANT of the most high God.
Her daily prayer is that sinners will come, and that Saints will come closer.
tommy carter
Tommy Carter was born in Walnut Grove, MS and started playing the piano at the age of 6. The beginning of his career in music was under the leadership of his father (James Carter) who was an awesome musician. He then took piano lessons in high school and furthered his studies at JSU graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree. But to top it off he's a saved musician whose daily goal is to uplift God's Kingdom through the ministry of music and to encourage and enlighten others daily. Tommy Carter is the minister of music at St. Luther and Friendship Missionary Baptist Churches.

Ms. Johnson is a member of New Horizon Church. Mother Desiree, as she is affectionately called, is a child of God. When ever asked to describe herself, she says, “I’m not even worthy,” but she stands “By the Grace and Mercy of God!” Ms. Johnson has also stated that she never wants to be “unreachable” or “unteachable” as a servant of God!
K. Lacy
K. Lacy has been working with choirs since childhood. She is the founder of the Mind and Music Ministry and is passionate about raising awareness for mental health through music. She firmly believes that music has a profound effect on mental health and she is so thankful that God provided her with such a gift that can affect anyone. She doesn’t care for accolades. She is a child of God and committed to be HIS instrument in whatever capacity HE chooses to use her.

Venora Brown
Venora Brown is a native of Macon, Mississippi. She is a gifted vocalist with a heart for ministry, and has dedicated much of her life to using her voice to inspire, encourage, and uplift others. As an original member of the world-renowned Mississippi Mass Choir, Venora has been privileged to share her gift on numerous recordings and performances. Her distinctive voice has touched audiences around the world. She is especially recognized for her memorable lead vocals on the gospel song “Having You There.”
“Having You There” is more than a song, it is a testimony of gratitude and devotion to God. Its message speaks to the power of God’s presence in every season of life. Through times of joy, uncertainty, struggle, and triumph, the song reminds us that having God with us makes all the difference. His presence brings strength when we are weak, comfort when we are hurting, and hope when the road ahead is unclear.
For Venora, singing is not simply about performing, it is about sharing a message. She believes that a song can reach places words alone cannot and that God can use a voice to bring healing, encouragement, and hope to someone’s heart.
Beyond the stage, Venora is a daughter, mother, and grandmother. She is known for her quiet spirit, warm heart, and genuine love for people. Her journey continues to be a testimony of faith, perseverance, and the blessing of using the gift God has given her.

Rembert Washington Memorial Chorale
The Rembert Washington Memorial Chorale was founded by Pastor John Woodard, Jr. in honor of his grandmother, Rembert Washington, a local pioneer in gospel music. Excellence comes to mind when this chorale is mentioned. They have been around for nearly 3 decades and God is still elevating them to a higher level.

CLYde tate
Reverend Clyde Tate is the pastor of Greater Antioch and St. James Missionary Baptist Churches. Pastor Tate is a man of God who preaches the Word of GOD! He is Holy Ghost filled, genuine, and has a love for people. He never meets a stranger and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Pastor Tate has also been gifted with a dynamic voice. His singing brings light into dark places and continues to illuminate every place he enters and departs.
